Worth a detour.

A postcard beach you access via a wooden staircase clinging to a cliff face like a barnacle. Small, golden, sandwiched between striated ochre rocks, with water so clear you'll feel watched. The restaurant at the top is genuinely good and genuinely expensive — the kind of place where the grilled fish costs what your hotel did, and you pay it because the view has colonized your brain.

Marinha's wilder, uglier, more committed sister. You get there via a dirt path and a rope-assisted scramble down a cliff that redefines "beach access." The reward: a raw, unmanaged cove with sea stacks that look like gods left their chess game half-finished. No sunbeds. No snack bar. No lifeguard. No pretense. This is what every Algarve beach looked like before someone built a road to it.

Benagil Cave

Overrated.

The Insta-famous sea cave with the hole in the roof. You've seen the photo. Here's what the photo doesn't include: a queue of kayaks and paddleboards outside the cave like it's a Costco, a floor that's wet rock, water that's cold and chest-deep, and a ceiling that's been photographed so many times it has its own agent. The cave is genuinely impressive geologically. The experience is a theme park ride without the ride.

Praia do Carvalho

Worth a detour.

A hidden cove you enter through a hand-carved tunnel in the cliff — like the beach is a secret you have to earn. Small, ringed by golden rock, with a single clap of sand that vanishes at high tide. Once you're through the tunnel you feel like you've discovered something. You haven't — the Romans knew — but the feeling is the point.

Praia do Castelo

A small, cliff-wrapped beach at the quiet end of Albufeira's western sprawl, named for a rock formation that looks like a castle (if you're feeling generous). Good sand, clear water, a wooden boardwalk that keeps the dunes intact, and a beach bar that's genuinely decent. The kind of beach that won't make a top-10 list but will make the day you're there better than the day you weren't.

Praia Dona Ana

Beautiful, no question — stacked golden rock formations, clear water, the kind of beach that sells postcards. But Dona Ana is the Algarve's most-told lie: it's tiny, it's mobbed, and in summer you'll be towel-to-towel with a man named Sven who's applied his sunscreen like frosting. The photo lies; the reality queues.

Praia do Beliche

Worth a detour.

Sagres-adjacent, cliff-ringed, and the kind of beach that makes you feel small in the right way. A wide scallop of sand beneath 60-meter ochre walls, with the Atlantic coming in cold and serious. It's sheltered from the worst of the Sagres wind, which means it's the beach the locals use when everything else is getting torn apart. The view west is the end of Europe. Literally — that's it, then ocean, then New York.

Praia de Galé (Valverde stretch)

If you're already there.

The western end of the long Albufeira-to-Armação sand sheet — quieter than Praia da Rocha, prettier than Albufeira proper, with the same golden cliffs softening into dunes. A good compromise beach: close to the resorts, far enough that you can hear the sea. The kind of place where a family can spend a week without drama and leave happy. That's not nothing.

Praia da Luz

A family resort beach built around a fishing-village core that's still half-visible if you squint. Black-rock headland, golden sand, a promenade of restaurants serving the same piri-piri chicken at three price points. Pleasant. Safe. The beach where you send your parents because they'll be happy and you won't worry.

Albufeira (Praia do Peneco)

Overrated.

The beach at the bottom of Albufeira — a wide, attractive, perfectly competent sand shelf trapped beneath a town that's a monument to British binge drinking. The beach is fine. The town is a strip bar with a tourist board. You go down to the sand, you have a lovely afternoon, you go back up to the town, and a man named Kyle offers you a fishbowl cocktail for €8 and a story you'll regret. The beach deserves better. So do you.

Praia do Amado (Sagres side)

Worth a detour.

Wild coast beach on the western edge of the Algarve — wide, dune-backed, cold-water, surf-driven. No sunbeds. No resort. Just a beach café, a pack of surfers, and an Atlantic that doesn't care about your comfort. The cliffs behind are a nature reserve. The sky here does things — sunsets that make atheists reconsider. This is the Algarve for people who found the southern coast too tame.

Meia Praia

If you're already there.

Lagos's municipal beach: 4km of flat, wide, sand-and-beach-club. No cliffs, no drama, no mystery — just a long, competent beach with a row of restaurants that exist to separate you from €30 and a sunburn. Fine. Useful. The beach equivalent of a reliable sedan. Go if your hotel's here and you can't be bothered to drive anywhere better.

Praia de Carvalhal

If you're already there.

A wide, dune-backed beach on the Carvoeiro-to-Armação stretch — attractive, accessible, and exactly the kind of beach that exists in a thousand places but is pleasant in all of them. Wooden boardwalks over the dunes, two beach restaurants doing respectable grilled fish, and sand enough that the crowd spreads. Nothing to write home about. Plenty to come back to.

Praia de Odeceixe

Worth a detour.

The last beach in the Algarve before you tip into the Alentejo, and the one that resets your standards. A river meets the sea here — you can swim in the warm creek with toddlers on one side, or brave the cold Atlantic on the other, separated by 50 meters of sand. The village behind it is a single street of white houses with a windmill. It's what the Algarve was before the budget airlines. Come here to remember.

Praia da Rocha

Overrated.

The Algarve's most-photographed wide-format beach and its most-obvious tourist economy. The sand is genuinely massive — 2km of it, framed by dramatic ochre cliffs — but the experience is a resort strip with a beach attached. Think: high-rises, foam parties, hen dos, and a sunbed operation so industrialized it has its own traffic. The €18 sunbed isn't a feature, it's a tax on not knowing better.
