Overrated.

The hang

The Algarve's most-photographed wide-format beach and its most-obvious tourist economy. The sand is genuinely massive — 2km of it, framed by dramatic ochre cliffs — but the experience is a resort strip with a beach attached. Think: high-rises, foam parties, hen dos, and a sunbed operation so industrialized it has its own traffic. The €18 sunbed isn't a feature, it's a tax on not knowing better.

The real intel

Best months: May, Sept. June is okay. July–Aug is a flesh mosh pit of the highest order.
Getting there: Portimão. 5 min from the train station. Trivial.
Where to stay: Anywhere but here. Stay in Portimão town and day-trip, or stay in Carvoeiro/Lagos and skip it entirely.
Cost reality: Sunbeds €15–25/day (the infamous €18 is real and common). Cocktails €8–12. The whole strip is a machine for extracting tourist euros.
The catch nobody tells you: It's the most crowded beach in the most crowded stretch of the most crowded coastline in Portugal. The cliffs are stunning; the infrastructure is a monument to bad taste.

The crowd

Peak season: shoulder-to-shoulder. British and Portuguese package tourists, stag and hen parties, families who didn't research. Off-season: empty and eerie — like a nightclub at 10am.
