The hang

The one on every "best beaches in Europe" list that somehow still isn't ruined. Gold cliffs, water the color of a lie, and a staircase from hell that filters out everyone who skipped leg day — which is the point. This is the beach that makes you understand why the Portuguese built cathedrals: they looked at this and thought, "we should try to compete." They were wrong to try.

The real intel

Best months
May–Jun or Sept. July–Aug is a German-tourist mosh pit; you'll queue for the staircase.
Getting there
Rent a car. The bus will betray you. Park at the top, descend the ~200 steps, suffer the climb back up in the sun.
Where to stay
Carvoeiro or Lagoa (15 min drive). Don't stay on-site — there's nothing but the beach and a snack bar that charges like it's Monaco.
Cost reality
Free to access. Parking free. Snack bar: €8 for a toastie. Sunbeds (2): €15–20/day if you must.
The catch nobody tells you
Near-zero shade and the tide eats the sand by afternoon. Mornings only. Bring an umbrella and a personality.

The crowd

Mid-density in shoulder season. Families, couples, the occasional influencer who hiked down for the gram and is now visibly overheating. Not a party beach. Leave if someone brings a Bluetooth speaker.

The receipts

The cliff trail to the east is unmaintained and has claimed ankles. Admire the arches from the sand.
