Albufeira (Praia do Peneco)

Overrated.

The hang

The beach at the bottom of Albufeira — a wide, attractive, perfectly competent sand shelf trapped beneath a town that's a monument to British binge drinking. The beach is fine. The town is a strip bar with a tourist board. You go down to the sand, you have a lovely afternoon, you go back up to the town, and a man named Kyle offers you a fishbowl cocktail for €8 and a story you'll regret. The beach deserves better. So do you.

The real intel

Best months
May, Sept. June for a balance. July–August: the strip is fully unleashed.
Getting there
Albufeira. Drive, bus, or shuttle from Faro airport (45 min). The old town is walkable once you're there.
Where to stay
Not in Albufeira if you value sleep. Stay west (Galé, Salgados) for the same beaches, less carnage.
Cost reality
Sunbeds €15–20. The strip: €5 pints, €8 fishbowls, regret is free. Old town restaurants are better and pricier.
The catch nobody tells you
The beach is lovely. The town above it is the Algarve's party district — loud, late, and aimed at a crowd that didn't come for the geology.

The crowd

Peak: dense. British package tourists, teens on first holidays, families who didn't know what they booked. Off-peak: actually pleasant.

The receipts

The cliff steps to the beach have been closed intermittently due to rock fall. Use the main access, not the sketchy shortcut the influencer told you about.
